The Principal Electrical Engineer serves as the senior electrical subject‑matter expert within a multidisciplinary engineering team composed primarily of Mechanical Engineers. This role provides deep electrical expertise, supports cross‑functional design efforts, and ensures that electrical considerations are fully integrated into product development. The Principal EE plays a key role in evaluating requirements, guiding design decisions, developing test methodologies, and resolving complex technical issues across the organization.
This position is hands‑on, collaborative, and central to maintaining electrical engineering excellence within a team where electrical expertise is limited.
Essential Functions
Electrical Technical Leadership
- Serve as the primary electrical engineering resource for a multidisciplinary team, providing expert input during design discussions, reviews, and troubleshooting.
- Guide Mechanical Engineers on electrical design intent to ensure proper integration into electro‑mechanical assemblies.
- Provide high‑level technical insight to support sound engineering decisions across programs.
Requirements Analysis & Feasibility
- Review customer requirements to determine electrical feasibility, identify risks, and recommend alternative approaches.
- Support quoting and early‑stage design by validating assumptions and identifying electrical challenges.
- Collaborate with Engineering Management and program teams to ensure requirements are clearly understood and aligned with product capabilities.
Electrical Design & Integration
- Lead the development of electrical designs, including circuits, PCBs, flex circuits, wiring, and test fixtures.
- Apply advanced electrical theory (transmission line behavior, signal integrity, power analysis) to ensure robust performance.
- Evaluate how existing products can be adapted or modified to meet new customer needs.
- Ensure electrical considerations are properly incorporated into mechanical designs and manufacturing processes.
Testing, Validation & Documentation
- Develop comprehensive Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Design Validation Test (DVT), and qualification test procedures that directly verify customer requirements.
- Support test execution and assist the Test Lab in troubleshooting and interpreting results using advanced measurement tools.
- Produce complete and accurate engineering documentation, including schematics, BOMs, compliance matrices, and technical reports.
R&D, Troubleshooting, & Continuous Improvement
- Lead R&D efforts to enhance existing products or develop new capabilities based on customer needs and emerging technologies.
- Serve as a key technical resource when issues arise during design, build, or testing phases.
- Drive root‑cause analysis and corrective actions for complex electrical or system‑level issues.
- Identify opportunities to improve products, processes, and test methodologies.
Cross‑Functional Support
- Provide electrical expertise to Manufacturing, Sales, Quality, and customers as needed.
- Support production builds, installation, and operational testing to ensure conformance to specifications and regulatory standards.
- Assist in evaluating manufacturing processes and identifying opportunities for improved reliability or efficiency.
Required/Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
- Engineering background with advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles including testing (Slip Rings/Twist Capsules are preferred but not required).
- Five to Ten years of Electro/Mechanical experience preferred.
- Previous Mechanical Experience is highly desired but not required
- Above average to expert knowledge of electrical engineering principles and processes.
- Above average ability to use a variety of T&M equipment including Oscilloscopes and Network Analyzers.
- Must possess electrical troubleshooting and basic mechanical skills.
- Ability to understand the abstract principles to manufacture electro-mechanical devices.
- Exceptional analytical, communication and organization skills.
- Ability to create engineering documents, wiring schematics, compliance matrices, and Bill of Materials (GD&T, revision control, engineering changes).
- Experience with Commercial, Industrial, Aerospace, Medical, Military, Nuclear, and/or Space requirements and standards (Military is preferred but not required).
- Understanding of power, analog and digital signals, serial communication protocols (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, Ethernet), EMI, shielding and grounding principles.
- Understanding of engineering systems and components including electrical signal transmission, coaxial systems, high frequency RF, fiber optics, encoders, potentiometers, and switches.
- Understanding of wire, cables, PCB, flex tapes, and connectors with integration into electrical/mechanical systems.
- ERP system experience to extract part information, costs, and BOM’s. (Preferred but not required)
- High degree of proficiency in computer office programs (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, IE, and One Note).
- Understanding of ISO, AS 9100, and quality clauses.
- Understanding of ITAR and EAR regulations (preferred but not required).
